Prayer Meeting Night in Millville
a poem by Hazel Mullen Owens

In 1956, Hazel Mullen Owens published a book entitled, "Exalting Christ in Verse." The following poem taken from that book...

It’s Prayer Meeting night here in Millville,
And Charlie has just rung the bell,
To call men and women to worship
The Saviour they love, oh, so well!

The Pastor has knelt in his study
To get something fresh from the Word,
In order to feed his dear people,
And send them home happy and stirred.

Oh, how they do love the prayer meetings!
The fellowship here is so sweet;
It’s pleasant to hear Christian greetings
When each Wednesday evening they meet.

They love to sing here in Millville,
Not one piece, but two, three or four,
Will often precede the prayer service,
Which last an half hour or more.

Oh! How they pray for their pastor,
His family, and each other too,
Until one can feel Heaven’s blessings,
Flow richly from pulpit to pew.

Each carry a burden for lost souls,
A loved one, or boy far away;
And tears of rejoicing are mingled,
With sighs, as they linger to pray.

Not only for those who are present,
But the absent ones too, get a share,
For each is remembered by someone,
Who earnestly names them in prayer.

They never forget Bill and Elsie,
So recently gone from our midst,
The Kiersteads, Uta and Nina,
The Sanders, and all of the rest.

Our Bible School, and Crusaders,
Our Students who study God’s word,
All get a share of the blessings,
Prayed down, by this group, from the Lord.

Tho’ often weary in body,
From toiling the whole day long,
These dear saints of God are anointed,
As they take part in worship and song.

The prayer meeting talk by the pastor,
So packed full of “kernels of wheat,”
Provide food for thought and expression,
For the folk when they get on their feet.

It’s a pleasure to hear them all witness,
The young ones as well as the old,
For each has his own testimony,
That’s worth more than silver or gold.

And each has his own way of telling
What Jesus has done for his soul,
Until oftentimes waves of blessing,
Like billows of joy o’er us roll.

Why, no one would miss the Prayer Meeting!
If it’s possible at all to be there,
It’s the ‘Soul’s Filling Station” in Millville,
Let’s hurry! It’s most time for prayer.
