Without a doubt, one of the greatest challenges we have in 2005 is finding the time and discipline to regularly enjoy a Sabbath. The following are selected reviews to the article, "The Rest of God: Stopping to Find What's Missing" by Mark Buchanan.
Review by Eric Hallett I read Mark Buchanan's article, "The Rest of God, Stopping to find what's Missing" and reflected on the degree of intentionality that it takes in our culture to rest. I remembered my beginning ministry years and how I always wanted the people of the church to view me as a busy man. Mark's article reminded me again of the lessons that pain has taught me about going too fast and missing some of life's important moments. It also served as a reminder that as a spiritual leader, I am a model to people and that many of our church members have no idea how to rest. Even if I am a novice and have a fear of the cultural consequences, rest is worth the risk and must be intentionally planned.
Review by Ryan Farrell Rest! It seems to be the most desired thing in our existence. A chance to slow down and catch our breath is at the forefront of our minds. In his article, “The Rest of God: Stopping to Find What’s Missing,” Mark Buchanan writes that by being in a hurry we can squander “treasures in pursuit of dust.” It’s easy to think that being busy infers that we are successful. However, when fundamentals like Bible reading, prayer, and family life are being forsaken for some other busy cause we find ourselves on a road away from the “rest” of God. Mark’s article truly inspires and challenges us to investigate our lives and priorities. I believe this is an important read for anyone wanting a “Sabbath”.
